Speed dating meets community impact as donors connect with nonprofit leaders
The Watertown Area Community Foundation’s Women & Giving program took a creative new approach to connecting donors with causes this week—hosting two events on Thursday, August 7, that blended storytelling with a fast-paced, interactive format.
More than 40 women attended the morning Coffee & Conversation, and 30 gathered for the afternoon Cocktails & Conversation, both held at the beautiful Terry Redlin Pavilion. The open, light-filled setting surrounded by windows proved to be a perfect backdrop for meaningful discussions.
The events gave nonprofit leaders the chance to speak with small groups of Women & Giving supporters, sharing their missions, stories, and impact before rotating to the next table – much like “speed dating”. Nonprofit leaders described the experience as “energizing” and “an expression of generosity in our community.” At the same time, attendees valued the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the work being done and evolving needs within Watertown.
“Our Women & Giving donors are deeply committed to making a difference,” said Cammie Mengwasser, Executive Director of the Watertown Area Community Foundation. “This event not only brought our donors together to pool their gifts into something greater, it also connected those gifts to real faces, real stories, and real impact.”
Nonprofit leaders included: Kim Bellum (formerly with Mount Marty University), Liz Brownell (Boys & Girls Club), Stacy Hendricks (Brothers & Sisters Behind Bars), Beth Lalim (Watertown Cares), Joy Nelson (Joy Ranch), Denise Ragels (Beacon Center), Barb Struwe (Girls Rule), and Amanda Woodruff (Rachel’s Hope).
“This event truly brought people together,” said Cammie Mengwasser, Executive Director of the Watertown Area Community Foundation. “Our nonprofit leaders loved connecting with so many inspiring women — and many of our attendees felt exactly the same way. The conversations were honest, the stories were eye-opening, and the support in the room was tangible.”
Now in its 22nd year, Women & Giving has directed more than $360,000 in grants and over $136,000 in scholarships toward programs and organizations that empower women and children in Watertown. Its mission is to help area women and children overcome barriers, increase their opportunities, and achieve their goals.
The Women & Giving Committee will award its 2025 grants in October, followed by the announcement of Women & Giving scholarship recipients in November.
The Foundation wishes to express gratitude to the nearly 140 donors who have already donated to the 2025 Women & Giving campaign.
